The Meaning Behind the Design

The Guardian Within: The Nervous System Landscapes is a wearable celebration of our nervous system, and a visual journey through six nervous system landscapes, each capturing a different way our inner guardian may experience and respond to the world.

Together, the six landscapes bring our nervous system to life as an inner guardian, reflecting the essence of how it may respond as we move through experiences of safety, connection, uncertainty, threat or overwhelm.

The Open Meadow represents the Welcomer, our safe and social state, where there is greater capacity for curiosity, connection, play and rest.

The Shifting Sands belong to the Peacemaker, who may seek safety through pleasing, accommodating, apologising or keeping the peace, sometimes losing touch with their own needs and boundaries in the process.

The Bursting Dam represents the Pathfinder, bringing urgency, restlessness and movement, with an impulse to create distance from what feels unsafe or threatening.

The Volcanic Ridge is home to the Defender, bringing powerful energy for protection, boundary-setting and responding when something feels wrong or needs to be defended.

The Frozen Forest represents the Still Watcher, where the body may become very still while remaining alert, watching and assessing what feels safe before movement becomes possible again.

And within the Hibernation Cave, the Hibernation Keeper slows everything down, conserving precious energy when life feels like too much and there is little capacity left to engage.

Each landscape reflects a different expression of our inner guardian, whether through connection, appeasement, movement, protection, stillness or conservation. These responses are automatic, shaped by our experiences and natural wiring, and they are always trying to protect us, even when their protection does not feel that way.

The invitation is not to fight our inner guardian, but to meet its responses with greater curiosity, compassion and understanding, while gently supporting the body towards greater safety, regulation and choice.
